This morning we awoke to the sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen was a mother, grandmother, and great grand mother and will be mourned by many. Her dedication to her duties until the very end of her almost-71 year reign is inspirational. Our club flag will fly at half-mast as a mark of respect until the the Queen’s funeral in ten days time. As we are a Royal club, I have written on behalf of the club to Buckingham Palace to convey our condolences to His Majesty The King and the Royal Family.

Over the Christmas break we were saddened to hear of the passing of the Club’s oldest and most enduring member, Penwill James Moore. Pen was born in Wellington in 1920, joined the Club in 1936, and remained a member until he died a few days before Christmas 2021. He began racing in Z Classes, and moved up to the 14 footers as a bailing boy on board the X Class Suelem, and the square bilger Advance, both registered at the time with RPNYC. With the help of his father, also named Pen, he built an Idle Along named Aurora, which…

As you will be aware, the NZ Government has introduced the ‘traffic light system’ as part of the new Covid-19 Protection Framework. This will directly affect clubs such as ours and the board of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (RPNYC) has worked its way through the various government announcements and guidance over the last few weeks to develop a COVID-19 policy for the Club. In considering how to respond to this new framework we have considered a number of factors including the health and safety of our staff, members and customers, along with understanding how best to ensure the…

I was saddened to hear this morning that Neville Dimock, long-time supporter and character of the Club, passed away peacefully at home yesterday. He was 89. Nev began racing keelboats with this Club in the early 1960s, with Medina, then Caprice. In the mid- 1970s he graced the harbour with the magnificent schooner Jacaranda. He also owned the launch Rongomau, registered with this Club through the 1970s and 80s. In more recent years he could be found cruising the converted pilot boat Otaroa around Wellington and the top of the South. Nev always had a smile, wry or otherwise, and…

With deep sadness we note the passing of Arthur Stewart, long-time member, supporter, and stalwart of the Club. A keen and accomplished sailor and competitor, Arthur was a shareholder in or raced on several famous yachts, including Dollar Equity, Pacific Sundance, Whispers of Wellington, Granny Apple, Thundercloud, and Red Herring II. As well as regularly sailing in Club events, including pretty much most offshore courses the Club has run, he competed in numerous significant international events, including the Southern Cross Cup, the Sydney to Hobart, the Clipper and Kenwood Cups, the Big Boat series in San Francisco, the Transpac, and…

This week we were saddened to hear of the passing of Alex Khan Alex endured a long and private siege against cancer, which she refused to let define her life or her ambition. She hadn’t been in New Zealand long before she was introduced to the Club and joined the crew of Gucci, capturing some attention as one of the ‘Gucci Girls’. Alex’s husband Phil has treasured memories of their time together racing and cruising on Gucci. Alex and Phil loved the water so much they bought Stepping Stone and lived aboard at Chaffers Marina.
