The team on Deb and Brent on Gucci report on competing in the 2020 Nelson Regatta.
The 11th Nelson Evolution Regatta was nothing but a pearler. After arriving into Nelson at 1AM, after a DNF in the Wellington – Nelson offshore race, due to lack of wind, racing for 23 hrs, with another 18hrs to go at 1 knot, it was time to retire, or not make the Nelson regatta at all.
Day one, Westerlies of 5 – 6 knots, saw the first race of three around the cans get blown up by a lack of wind. Restart for race one and a Northerly come in, as did the start of champagne sailing for the remaining regatta.
Day two took us racing to the heart of the Abel Tasman National Park, Torrent Bay, 30 miles away. An excellent beat over, two tacks only, one sail change, and the usual hilarity taking place at the park over a few quite ones.
Day three – the sea breeze arrived early, allowing time to get the short race around Tonga Island in before racing back to Nelson. The ride back being a sensational 30 mile kite run in 10 – 15knts, blue sky, flat water, it does not get better than that.
Back at the club for prize giving, series results for the Port Nich boats: Gucci 1st on line, 2nd on club, Agilita 3rd on club, Div 2, Nedax Racing 4th club in Div one.
Port Nich boats, give it a go in 2021, flat water, very convivial club, great bar food, excellent prizes, it’s a winner all round. And there’s always a fish or two to be caught on the way home……
Thanks TBCC
