On 27-29 January, Helter Skelter competed in the Bay of Islands Sailing Week, a regatta for keelboats, trailer yachts and sports boats. Helter Skelter was joined by three other Wellington boats that made the trek north ā Daisy Duke, Magic Trick, and Onco Fonco. To make the most out of the week, Phil, Craig and Mikey travelled north on Saturday with the boat and were joined on Sunday by Northlanders Finn and Isabel, giving us the same crew as last year. Almost every sport has training sessions. The purpose is to practice with time to stop and discuss different aspects of your performance. When you compete in a race the idea is to be able to string all of these different aspects together.Ā There’s a natural conflict between learning from your mistakes and racing. From a race perspective stopping and looking back during a race is the wrong thing to do. If you just stuffed up your kite drop, it’s not a good time to discuss what went wrong. The team on Deb and Brent on Gucci report on competing in the 2020 Nelson Regatta. The 11th Nelson Evolution Regatta was nothing but a pearler. After arriving into Nelson at 1AM, after a DNF in the Wellington ā Nelson offshore race, due to lack of wind, racing for 23 hrs, with another 18hrs to go at 1 knot, it was time to retire, or not make the Nelson regatta at all. Wellington Ocean Sport has recently added a new boat to the fleet. She is Pugwash, which began life racing with the Club back in 1979. Pugwash is a Whiting 29 and we will be using her to teach cruising skills. Pugwash was built by Peter Sutton using the lofting and temporary frames from the plug for the production Whiting 29 glass boats. The hull is built in double diagonal treated Kahikatea over stringers and laminated frames all fastened with West System epoxy and heavy copper roves. RPNYC members Michael Instone (recent academy grad), Phil Bishop (Helter Skelter owner) and Craig Ryburn (helm), joined local Bay of Islands Crew of Isabel and Kane to compete in Bay of Islands Sailing week over 22 ā 24 January. We have reduced the number of students to four and the course will now run as two evenings (a briefing and a night sail) and two full days.
