The Gallagher Insurance Wellington Classic is a new development for the Port Nicholson Regatta bringing a rich piece of history into the modern sailing scene, and honouring the tradition of one of the city’s oldest and most cherished sporting events.
In 1893 the Wellington regatta awarded a purse of 10 pounds and 8 shillings to the first-place winner on handicap. In 2024, that amount is equivalent to $2,487.32.
The Wellington Classic will follow this historic precedent, with $2,487.32 awarded to the first-place winner on PHRF Base in the single race that is the Classic. The winner will take all, with this prize being presented alongside the prestigious 1891 Jessie Logan Trophy, repurposing one of the oldest cups in the club, that reflects the long history of the sport in Wellington.
Entrants in the Wellington Classic can choose to enter the entire regatta, which includes both the Open and Harbour Divisions, or simply the Classic event itself. For those participating in the full regatta, the Classic race will serve as the final race, with an all-in start, adding to the excitement and spectacle. It will be raced on a Harbour course similar to the historic regatta courses of the late 19th century.
To be eligible for the Classic and the prize money you must have a valid PHRF Certificate. Obtaining a PHRF certificate is easy and free for first-time applicants, making this event accessible to a wide range of sailors looking to compete for this historic prize. Start the process here. If you are a multihull boat, don’t worry we will have prize money you can race for too.
So enter now and race like it’s 1893! Disclaimer – current racing rules apply.
