As the Club will be closed from today for the biggest refurbishment work since the 1980s, it seems fitting to post a potted history of our Club house. Our Club was established in 1883, but had to wait forty years before actually having a clubhouse. Meetings were held in rented hotel rooms, generally the Empire on Willis Street or Clyde Quay Hotel, or after they were completed in 1904/5, a boatshed at Clyde Quay. During this time there was another Yacht Club over near Pipitea called the Thorndon Yacht Club, which was run by the wealthier Yacht owners who kept…

In light air, and with a downhill start, 6 boats jostled for position and a clean start off EBMYC on their way to the Brother’s and back. The big black sails got away first; Blink, Bullistic, and Code Breaker all under Gennaker, and slipped ahead from Gucci, with Am Meer bringing up the rear. It was a minefield at the bottom of the bay with converging pressure creating holes all over Kau Bay, unfortunately Gucci placed the wrong bet, opting to head wide into Northerly pressure only to get stuck, whilst the rest of the fleet navigated the corner and…

Stanley and Robbie McCutcheon (RNZYS) drew for 2nd and…
Robert Julian Scott was a British-born engineer who spent most of his life and career in Christchurch. He had an outstanding engineering mind, which can be read about on Te Ara and wikipedia. He also happened to be a founding member of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club Scott had designs built in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. He started out in radically changing existing boats, to designing yachts and rigs. He met with varying levels of success, but they were always somewhat experimental if not radical in concept. This article was first published in the Journal of the Wellington Classic Yacht…
Below is another story from the early 1970s from Paul Hastings. One has to wonder what went into those sandwiches… Some years ago, Very early one morning, the Kidnapper, under command of Brian (“Cardie”) Cardiff, assisted by his eternally-respectful crew, finished the attack on Cook Strait, and arrived at Nelson sufficiently far back in the fleet as to have not won. Accordingly, there was nowhere for us to moor up close to the Nelson Yacht Club, and we went around to the Port, where we found a line-up of participating yachts moored outboard of the 17 metre Sailing vessel Friis…
