Many of our members served in both World War one and World War two and and as always ANZAC day is an opportuntiy to rememner them. One such person was RPNYC Life Member Lieutenant-General Bernard Cyril Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg VC GCMG KCB KBE DSO*** KStJ (21 March 1889 – 4 July 1963).
Bernard Freyberg was a British-born New Zealand Victoria Cross recipient and soldier who later served as the seventh Governor-General of New Zealand.
The photo shows Bernard Freyberg (centre) as a youngster on board his older brother Oscar’s boat Viking in Wellington. Oscar died at Gallipoli and another brother Paul died at Passchendaele.
Our neighbour in the Clyde Quay Precinct, Freyberg Pool, takes its name from Sir Bernard who was also a very accomplished swimmer.
This year we held an ANZAC day race With Cantilena coming home in first place on club handicap from After Midnight and Airship.
