The first race in the Summer Series were two short windward leeward races off Port Jerningham, timed to allow the boats back to the club for the America’s Cup racing. There were thrills aplenty with the strong southerlies. You can’t beat Wellington on a good day and she was definitely a stunning evening for the first Twilight race of 2021. Four boats took to the water for four races around the pins, including one crew from the Wellington Youth Sailing Trust. Wellington experienced typical spring conditions yesterday for the third race in the Yamaha Spring Series which saw wind gusts over 35 knots and a decent chop on the harbour. Five boats from Division B braved the conditions for one race around Course 27 (club start, mark 5, mark 11and club finish). There was plenty of broaches to keep the crews on their toes. Zimmerframe Racing took line honours and Wiseguy claimed Club and PHRF. https://www.latitude41south.com/Sailing/RPNYC-2020-Spring-Series-Race-3/
Putting in mildly, the conditions were pretty uncomfortable for the nine boats and 65 souls that headed out of the Wellington Heads to complete the 30 mile course to Baring Head and Sinclair Head. Of the fleet that left RPNYC at 10am, six completed the course in under five hours, including After Midnight, the only 8m yacht. Boats: 88% Proof, After Midnight, Blink, Bullistic, Gucci, The Guarantee, Vendetta, Wiseguy, Zimmerframe Racing Team II The race management crew for the day were Pedro Morgan, Esther Prince, Jim Gordon, Sarah Williams and Mel Zytecka. https://www.latitude41south.com/Sailing/RPNYC-Fitzroy-Bay-Race/
Thirteen RPNYC boats headed around to Evans Bay for the EBYMBC Opening Day and Interclub series. The wind was consistent for the 2pm start outside the club. Some issues were had by some who will remain nameless when it came to counting their POB. Caniwi headed over to support the race and also had a go at log finishing. The record now stands at 30kg. Caniwi support crew were Jim Gordon (driver), Thijs Nicolas (assistant) and Mel Zytecka (assistant) Photos of the day can be viewed here https://www.latitude41south.com/Sailing/EBYMBC-Open-Day-2020/
COVID-19 restrictions may have put a damper on the traditional RPNYC opening ceremony but it didn’t stop some fantastic racing. The course took the fleet of 28 boats around mark 9 to mark 25 and then out to mark 10 before a fast run back to the club finish line. Caniwi was called back from the race to help Haumuri back to her moorings after losing her engine. Wellington finally provided some wind to allow racing for the Commodore’s Trophy and Race 4 of the winter series to get underway. Two classic boats, Lizzie and Shemara, joined the fleet for the course around Wellington Harbour, taking in 25, 4 and 10 before a finish back at the club. St Laurence took Line honours and Club in the Commodores Trophy and Gucci won PHRF. In the Winter Series, St Laurence took Line Honours, White Cavalier won Club and Gucci again took PHRF. Thanks to Kate Beckett who was RO for the race. Photos of the race can be found…
The instructions were clear. A race which was at least two hours for the fastest boats in light and fickle wind conditions. Ten boats took up the challenge. The course took in marks 25, 4, 10 and back to 4 before heading for the finish line at the club. The race management team were: DO – James Snowdon (on the water) RO – Roger Cook RA – Lucie Casale Caniwi skipper – Bob McVeagh Caniwi crew – Sarah Williams Caniwi crew – Mel Zytecka Photos can be found here from today’s race. https://www.latitude41south.com/Sailing/RPNYC-2020-2-Handed-Race-1/
