Saturday saw club members joined by guests from the diplomatic community, other Wellington yacht clubs, supporters, friends and sponsors to celebrate Opening Day of the 134th Season. Commodore Mark Gordon outlined his vision for the club for the new season and Mayor of Wellington Celia Wade-Brown highlighted the relationship all Wellingtonians have with the harbour and its environs. Mayor Wade-Brown then concluded the ceremony with the traditional breaking of the burgee.
The wet and blustery conditions on Saturday didnāt put off a large contingent of our visitors taking to the water ā a big thank you to our skippers and crews that took guests out and showed them how fantastic sailing in Wellington can be and our Sailing Secretary Nicci Wood for her fabulous organising skills.
The Wardroom was looking fit for the occasion thanks to Rear Commodore Phillipa Durkin and her team of volunteers. Considerable effort has gone into the installation of historic photos along the walls. Special thanks to Philippa, Chris Coad, Gavin Pascoe, Tim Wood and Denise Durkin for their time. It was a successful day on the water for St Laurence, taking the Waddilove Trophy on club, the Rutherford and Bond Trophy on line and 1st place in the Ambassadorās Trophy 2016-17 with a (brave) representative from the Pakistan Embassy on board.
