The what and the why We all use the harbour and the ocean as our play- and sportsground, a place to soothe our souls and relax, sometimes even as a bar or social location, so it’s only fair if we look after this precious environment. That’s where the Clean Club programme comes in. This is an initiative to combine efforts around the country (and in association: the world), lead by YNZ and executed by Sailing Clubs and its members – us. It provides structure, guidance and rewards so we all can contribute in a useful and effective way. It alsoĀ aligns…

This grad came straight out of the Grad programme, and their immediate approach to life at Port Nich was – what can I do, how can I help? From initial forayā€™s out on Te Ruru, to helping out with a Rum Race, to jumping behind the bar, within weeks they soon become a face that was missed if they werenā€™t around. From rum racing they volunteered to help with twilight racing, where within a number of racing was enquiring as to why things were done a certain way and was exposed to the expert skills of Shayne Priddle and Paul…

Awarding someone the Personality of the Year is a satisfying task to do, but also tricky with all the great humans we have in the Club. Spoilt for choices I do believe though that it is the right one. So letā€™s gets on… The personality for the year 2022 is relatively new to the club and sailing, but has made a big impact since joining. They have contributed a lot of their spare time already on and off the water, more often than not behind the scenes. We believe this recognition is well deserved despite the short timeframe of being…

The Volunteer of the Year Award is awarded to the many dedicated RPNYC volunteers that without each and everyone of these dedicated members, our club activities would not survive. Attributes of generosity, humility, just getting on with it without fuss or fanfare are typical attributes of volunteers who support our club and are passionate to ensure its success. The Volunteer of the Year Award is given each year to a volunteer who shows these attributes and makes a significant contribution to the running of our club. Every year, it is very difficult to choose a person to award this trophy…

By Tim Hampton It was fantastic to see seven boats line up for the 2022 Barton Marine Wellington to Nelson race – including RPNYC boats the Guarantee and Gucci – albeit in very light conditions. Furthermore, the boats could consistently see three or four other boats around them, which made for competitive racing throughout. The first six hours were really light. Gucci opted to rock hop along the coast, which kept us in touch with the leading boats. Kokomo took a similar path – at one point we saw them tacking out on starboard from well east of Karori light. The…

This yearā€™s Cook Strait Classic race had a bit of everything for the intrepid few that lined up on a grey Saturday morning. A frisky forecast of 30kts gusting 40kts, and rough sea in the Strait, promised plenty and delivered on so much more. I was crewing on the Shaw12 ā€˜Blinkā€™, with a combined team of nine. The big debate on the dock was how wet the race would actually be (turned out it was quite wet!) We started on time at 0930 with a reef in the main and the #2, and reached off to Point Halswell, which then…

Probably the least windy weekend so far, and what an awesome one it turned out to be! On Friday night, the barbecues were running hot with the most delicious racks prepared and cooked by Commodore/Chef Dave, supplemented by other foods brought in by you, the members. It was great to see so many contributing and sharing food, stories and lots of laughter. Inside, Cedric entertained the crowd with life music to celebrate Young 88’s 40th birthday. Yummy cakes and bubbles made this celebration perfect. A great evening with lots happening, lots of sailors and social members involved! Saturday’s Social Sail/Cruise…
