Hold on to your hats, Spring is here! Although the weather has been a mixed bag of late we have had some fantastic days out on the water. The temperature is definitely on the rise, the days are getting longer and we have plenty of ways for you to spend the extra daylight hours!
Casual Racing
Now is the time of the year that casual racing really takes off. Whether it be the Wednesday night Twilight Series, Saturday Afternoons, or the very social Friday night Rum Races, we have racing opportunities to suit all abilities. With an Instructor on board and wet weather gear provided a casual race with Wellington Ocean Sports is the easiest way to get out on the water and gain further experience.
The next available race is this Saturday afternoon, followed by race 2 in the Wednesday night Twilight Series on 21 October and the first Rum Race of the season on Friday 30 October. Places are limited so book now to avoid disappointment.
Racing Crew
Our next Racing Crew course commences on Saturday 7 November, it runs over 4 consecutive Saturdays and will compete in at least 2 RPNYC Club races. The advantage of doing this course as opposed to simply going racing is that over a four day period we will take you step by step through hoisting, lowering and trimming spinnakers, all with the aim of making you “competent crew on a racing boatâ€. This will also give you greater confidence when taking up RPNYC member crew requests.
Racing Skipper
The Racing Skipper course follows on from the Racing Crew course. Participants will consolidate all the skills they have learnt through the Racing Crew course and elevate you to the level of “competent skipper on a race boatâ€. The next course is running alongside Racing Crew and commencing on Saturday 27 February.
This course is equivalent to a Level 3 Yachting New Zealand racing course. It will provide you with all the skills required to take a greater role in the decision making on a racing boat, and give you the confidence to lead a team through a yacht race.
The course will focus on:
- Continue to improve boat handling
- Improve racing skills
- Exploring tactical aspects of racing
- Teamwork and communication in pressure situations
- Looking at the bigger picture of a yacht race
By the end of this course you will be confident racing around the harbour, so get in quick and book here!
Cruising Crew
For those wanting to get involved in the wonderful world of cruising our next Cruising Crew course is running over Monday and Wednesday evenings and commences on commencing on Monday 9 November. Cruising Crew follows on from the Learn to Sail Keelboats course and provides an opportunity to consolidate and build on your knowledge and skills. It also allows you to develop seamanship skills and covers navigation, weather, rules of the road and includes a night sail. Cruising Crew leads on to the very popular Cruising Skipper course.
